Why Is Carbon Fiber So Popular in Sports Equipment?

In the sporting goods industry, carbon fiber is often hailed as the “king of new materials.” A surprising yet highly telling fact is that the largest market for carbon fiber is not aerospace or wind turbine blades, but rather sports and leisure products. In 2023, demand for carbon fiber in China’s sports and leisure sector reached 18,800 metric tons, ranking first among all application sectors. The widespread popularity of carbon fiber in the sporting goods industry stems from its irreplaceable performance advantages and an increasingly mature industrial infrastructure.

Performance advantages are the fundamental reason carbon fiber has gained widespread popularity. Carbon fiber-reinforced resin-based composites offer outstanding benefits, including high specific strength and specific modulus, excellent fatigue and corrosion resistance, and strong design flexibility. Their strength can reach 7 to 9 times that of steel, yet their density is only one-quarter that of steel and two-thirds that of aluminum. In terms of fatigue resistance, carbon fiber composites retain up to 60% of their strength after one million cyclic stress tests—far exceeding the 40% retained by steel and the 30% retained by aluminum. Additionally, carbon fiber composites possess excellent damping properties; the viscoelasticity of the polymer matrix and the friction at the interfaces convert vibrational kinetic energy into thermal energy, effectively reducing vibration and noise—a critical factor for sports equipment that requires precise control. In terms of design flexibility, by altering the orientation and arrangement of the fibers, materials can be customized to suit different sports, as well as the age and skill level of individual athletes—a level of customization that is difficult to achieve with typical isotropic metallic materials.

In terms of specific applications, carbon fiber has become deeply integrated into various types of sports equipment. Pole vault poles have evolved from hickory wood, bamboo, nylon, and fiberglass to carbon fiber composites. Carbon fiber poles convert the kinetic energy generated by an athlete’s run-up into elastic deformation energy, which is then released as potential energy to propel the athlete into the air, driving the continuous breaking of world records. In the cycling sector, the development of carbon fiber bicycles began in 1974. Today, brands such as TREK and SPECIALIZED in the United States, as well as domestic brands like Xidesheng and Ruibao, hold significant market positions. At the Paris Olympics, the Xidesheng full-suspension XC bike used by Chinese athletes features a T1100 carbon fiber frame weighing just 1,100 grams, with a total bike weight of 9.4 kilograms—making it the lightest product of its kind globally. In the racquet sector, domestic brands have utilized carbon fiber composite technology to produce lightweight yet high-strength badminton and tennis racquets. Carbon fiber is also widely used in niche areas such as fishing rods, golf clubs, ski poles, and winter sports equipment, making these items lighter and more durable. Taking carbon-plate running shoes as an example, Xtep has partnered with Zhongfu Shenyong to incorporate domestically produced high-performance carbon fiber into high-end carbon-plate running shoes, meeting performance requirements for lightness, high rebound, and durability.

From an industry trend perspective, the market outlook for carbon fiber in the sporting goods sector remains consistently positive. The global market size for carbon fiber composites in sporting goods is projected to reach approximately 27.86 billion yuan in 2025 and is expected to approach 40.79 billion yuan by 2032. The use of domestically produced carbon fiber is reducing production costs; the price of some domestically produced carbon fiber bicycles has already dropped to around 5,000 yuan, and carbon fiber is rapidly expanding from professional competitive gear into mass-market sports equipment. At the same time, technological innovation is constantly expanding the boundaries of carbon fiber’s applications—from modified aerospace-grade carbon fiber sandwich structures that provide snowboards with significant vibration damping and fatigue resistance, to nano-reinforced carbon fiber and open-weave fabric concepts that enhance laminate uniformity and surface quality. The performance ceiling for carbon fiber sports equipment continues to rise.

From professional competition to recreational fitness, carbon fiber has become an indispensable core material in the sporting goods industry thanks to its exceptional mechanical properties, outstanding design flexibility, and continuously decreasing cost of use. As the carbon fiber industry chain matures further and innovative technologies continue to emerge, the depth and breadth of carbon fiber’s applications in the sporting goods sector are bound to reach new heights.
